1. What is a well?

Groundwater provides environmental concern in two ways.  It can be depleted (in quantity), and it can be contaminated (affecting quality).

2.  How is ground water depleted?
(a)  How does the concept of a cone of depression affect depletion?
(b)  Describe how housing depletes groundwater.

3.  How is ground water contaminated?
(a)  Pollution sources can be classified as either point, or non-point sources.  Make 2 lists, showing the Point sources and Non-point sources shown in the diagram below.
(b)  Write a paragraph describing what the picture below shows.


(c)  Describe how housing contaminates groundwater.
(d)  Describe how waste disposal sites contaminate groundwater.

4.  Why is groundwater contamination such a serious problem?
(a)  Read about groundwater and wetlands and summarize their significance in two sentences.
