Recent Earthquakes and Volcanoes - we're talking this past week!
ArcMap:
Files: c:/copy of O drive/world/....
a. country.shp
b. Plat_Pol.shp - make this layer transparent and use red for the actual boundaries so that you can distinguish from the country boundaries.
Set up the Printer:
Go to File - Page and Print Setup - make sure you have the correct printer - HP 4600 - make sure it is set to landscape
Save:
Create a file on your H drive - give it a name and save often!
Earthquakes: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php - get the Latitude and Longitude for at least 10 recent earthquakes - carefull of the aftershocks - get 10 in different locations.
Volcanoes: http://www.volcano.si.edu/reports/usgs/ - scroll down to get the Latitude and Longitude of at least 10 recent volcanoes.
Using the Go to xy button in ArcMap's Toolbar and enter the Lat. and Long. - use the add point to place a dot on the map for each earthquake and volcano.
East Long. = +
West Long. = -
North Lat. = +
South Lat. = -
Use a different colour for the Volcanoes to indicate wether they are caused by a. Divergent, b. Convergent and c. Transform faults. - Figure how to do this yourselfs. A starting point would be to go to the Plate Tectonic slide show to find an image that shows the type of faults on the earth. Include this in your legend.
What to hand in:
Create a map that includes the most recent earthquakes and volcanoes.
